Born in Haiti, where she only spent a couple years of her early life there. She started writing at a very young age at 12 . When she got older she moved to New York. 

In  1802 - French force led by Napoleon's brother-in-law, Charles Leclerc, fails to conquer Haitian interior. Because of these events they were able to get there Independence. François-Dominique Toussaint was the leader of the Haitian Revolution.  He was the first Black insurrection in November 1791. 

Dutty Boukman was an African man, enslaved in Haiti, one of the most visible early leaders of the Haitian Revolution. Historians estimate that anywhere between 9,000 and 20,000 Haitians were killed in the Dominican Republic on the orders of the Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo. Voodoo is a  religion that originates in Africa. In the Americas and the Caribbean, it is thought to be a combination of various African, Catholic and Native American traditions. Haitian Creole mythology, Tonton Macoutes was a bogeyman who kidnapped errant children in the night and stored them in his knapsack.
