Children of the sea notes

“Children of the Sea” opens with a man writing a letter

Currently at sea on a boat with 36 other people, he looks at the sky and thinks memories from their childhood.

Looking around the boat, sails are white bed sheets spotted with blood.

They remind him of loss of innocence and his lover’s refusal to have sex with him.

He tells her he was fine with her decision and that he just wanted to be close to her.

The man ruefully remarks that his lover’s father will probably marry her off, now that he is gone.

He begs her not to marry a soldier, because “they’re almost not human”

Back in Haiti, the female letter writer despairs about her life.

The sound of bullets floods the streets day and night. The schools have closed, the old president has fled, and the army has taken over.

No one dares to leave their house. The girl’s father orders her to destroy tapes from the male letter writer’s controversial radio show, but she keeps a few.

The other members of the male letter writer’s youth federation group have disappeared, and are presumed to be either dead or in prison.

It becomes clear that the male letter writer fled Haiti via boat in order to avoid the same fate.

His lover shares that she no longer draws butterflies because black ones warn of death.

draft 2

The play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, is a tragedy about two lovers whose deaths make there fighting families come back together. The scene that my group chose to perform was act lll scene l. This scene was very important in the book because this is when Romeo's best friend Mercutio finds out that the girl he's in love with is a Capulet. Also there is a fight that takes place within this scene it's with Tybalt Juliet's cousin who hates Romeo. Since all of this is happening in one scene it was challenging to take the role of Mercutio because you need to bring out different emotions like sadness, then anger. In this paper I will analyze the text for my character Mercutio.
Right before Mercutio is about to bleed out he is able to say one more sentence before he dies. He wants to curse both of there houses Montagues and Capulets “A plague o’ both your houses” (3.1.87). He says this because he is disappointed in his friend Romeo because he betrayed his friend and his family by falling in love with a Capulet. So when it was this part in us performing the play when i said this i tried to stutter when i said it becuase it who be more realistic. Then if i was to say it all in one breath. Also I wanted to change up the tempo of how fast i'm reading it.
The staging of the scene was important to this fight scene because we wanted the audience to be able to see what's happening the whole time we are performing. So we chose to stand in the center of the stage during the whole time. But in the beginning my charger Mercutio was standing toward the left side so the stage and as the scene digress I slowly moved to the middle. This was a good idea because it made it so that the audience was able to figure out that it's the most important part of the scene when my character fights.
I found that this scene may sound simple to perform but when really it's hard because when you are fighting to make it look realistic you need to actually portray the emotion of anger, because you are fighting to the death with someone.
The main emotions that I tried to focus on when I was reading the play to prepare myself for the performance of the play was flustered. This is an emotion that needed to be brung out because Mercutio receive all this information at once with Romeo liking a Capulet. Who lied to him and now he was to fight to the death to stand up for him, and he eventually dies because of it.
I want to talk more about my character Mercutio and why he is a very important role in this scene. To start off Mercutio is Romeo's best friend, someone characteristics that describe him are that he is loyal to his friends. Hes funny, like a change of pace character to make the place seem less dramatic he's there to lighten the mood. And the last one is he is devoted to pretty much whatever romeo does he's there to help. He is also neither a Montague or a Capulet. So even though he doesn't really have any hate between the two parties other than his opinion there is no need for him to ever be put in a situation where he would need to fight a Capulet or a Monatue.
To continue on why my character is essential  in the play Romeo and Juliet is before Mercutio dies in his final words he curses the two households and predicts that the love between Romeo and his mistress will not end well. Witch Mercutio is right, because after my character's death Romeo realizes the consequences he must deal with in his love affair. Thus, because of the last few events that have taken place it's a build up for Romeo to then kill Tybalt, which leads to him being exiled from Verona and his eventual death. So you can say that my character Mercutio essential in driving the action forward in this play. He foreshadows the important and horrible events, towards his friend Romeo. And he also gives the audience the information they need throughout the play. The death of my character is what I would say the “turning point” in the play. For all these reasons, Mercutio is essential to the play.
Now I will be telling you the importance of staging in a black box theater. First off if you have ever been in that type of theatre you will know its all black, hence the name. Now that color is a interesting one, what I mean is it really makes you stand out because that is what the color black does it's used in art to make whatever they are drawing pop. So we wanted to use this to the fight scenes advantage. How we did this you may be wondering? Well it's simple all we did was at first start away from each other so there was clearly a cap between the three characters in our scene. And the black wall was the the middle making us seem even farther apart. But, as we say our lines we would take steps forward to shortened the black wall gap. This signified one to our fight scene because we need to be close but also because we need the audience to see what is going on. These Are the reasons why we choose to do the staging we did.
The staging really impacted my character the most because my lines are also for the audience, so they can still follow along with the plot. So, I needed to emphasizes certain lines so the audience knows. Also  when I said them I had to be centered in the middle of the stage. And had to project my voice, because of this it really gave me the motivation to memorize my lines. But also do it in a way where it would sound and feel like something Mercutio would have sounded like. I really had to dig deep and climb the levels of acting, to do this I needed to add the little things to my character so it doesn't seem like I was just talking. One thing I did was I used eye contact meaning some lines I would look Romeo n the eyes but then sometimes I would look at the ground this is symbolizing the bond that had been broken between the two.
Another thing that I had to do for my character is figure out a costume to wear. Since he isn't as high of a status as Romeo I couldn't wear gold to signify royalty and higher social status. And since he doesn't belong to neither households then I couldn't have chose a red or a blue. But after giving it though I chose to wear blue, because even though he isn't a Montague he acts like one. And he's always involved with the “beef” created by the two. Also it was a neutral color to also signify that he doesn't have a actually side but he's more for the Montagues the the Capulet because of Romeo.
The reasons why I did all this was to really understand my character Mercutio. And to successfully do that I needed to analyze the text and really try to step in the shoes of Mercutio. I feel like I did a pretty good job portraying him, however the areas that I needed to do better in where making the different emotions come through. Looking back on it I could have just the Stanislavski technique. It made the actor find inner emotions and times that you felt that emotion in real life. So for example when Mercutio was angry I could have thought of a time when I felt anger and if I did that I could have portrayed their emotions better.

12/3
sample 1

analysis of lit features (4-5) very detailed background about the play and a lot of good quotes.
performance choices made to reflect LA (7-10) Too much background in the play, overall though it was good
writing(4-5)
The reasons why I gave the following grades for this first sample if because first off I think that it was organized for the most part, and also she just a good vocabulary when creating them. The connections that she made I thought were correct and made the reader be able to follow along with the essay. The person made the essay flow together and overall i think that they did a good job. they could improve the essay more by making the quotes they inserted better. and explain and elaborate more on there ideas

sample 2
analysis of lit features (5-5) very detailed background about the play and a lot of good quotes.
performance choices made to reflect LA (8-10) Too much background in the play, overall though it was good
writing(5-5)
I think this one was better then the first sample because of all of the quotes they busted when they wrote there essay it really wrapped up there ideas and didn't leave the open and make you wonder,  kinda like what sample 1 did. I also like all of this information that they included in there essay but it was almost too much like in class when we did the first essay you don't want to included too much background because then you can loose focus on what you are really talking about

Act lll scene l

Romeo and Juliet

Challenge when trying to portray mercutio was trying to figure out what emotions to show and when to show them. The reason for this is because in the scene there are many things that my character figures out like that his best friend loves someone that is a capulet. so he has to acted shocked then he needs to be angry because Romeo is accusing him of not being loyal to him. And also when he fights tybalt he must be angry becuase he's getting into a duel. then lasty he has to feel bitter becuase he loses the dual and he's going to die. and as he's about to die he puts a curse on the two households. So to include all those where really challenging.

I really enjoyed the play, because it was based on real events that happened and it was important in America's history. And also it was a one person play. So other than the one character actually onstage but played more than one role. She was amazing, in the way she was able to switch from different characters voices. And example of what I mean like when  she would portray she was more like hunched over and plant a lot and had a harder time voice. And then when she switched to the mother she was more proper she sit up straight shoulders  back and her voice was nice and calm.  Then when she was the kid you know she acted like she liked talked childish and wasn't like well educated with her words and was just like funny.   I like the plot of the play a lot because it really gave me a sense of what African-Americans had to go through in these certain areas, more importantly like down south how racist people were so segregated. It's horrible to think that that was only 50 years ago. It's not like we haven't beeen without slavery for hundreds of years it's somthing that most grandparents probably remember.  It's crazy to think that white people wouldn't allow African-Americans to just be associated with the kids, it's more importantly they wouldn't even let them go to school together. And because of this white people.among us much better education than that African-Americans because the more likely is that most the time and more money to spend and to send them to better schools.  Overall To conclude I really enjoyed this play and it was a real eye-opener and I enjoy it enjoyed it and I want to go to another play based off of that time period because it's just somthing that we as students aren't educated a lot on now a days.

Wednesday, November 16, 2016

when I was doing research on the play, what I found was that will be taking place in the rock Arkansas during a time where segregation was a main factor in black peoples lives.  The play is going to be about a girl who will be attending a all white school.  This is unheard of and she is the first one, the first black woman to attend the school. She will be facing a lot of verbal and  physical abuse from white females and males. The story will be picked up by major news outlets and her story will be told.  During this whole thing she still goes to this weights all even if she gets bullied and it's called the N-word every time she goes and at the first day of school there's a riot and her mom barely make it a lot .  The N-word is used a lot in this play  to make sure that the audience understands how degrading and how he makes people feel human, and it gives the white people power over  blacks.

When I watch the video one thing that I think well was memorizing my lines, the reason for this is because it is really challenging to do. And also I thought I would mess up because  I was nervous, so I thought I would forget them. But because I used the strategy of recording myself and listening to it over and over again I was prepared for when I had a brain fart. Another thing I thought I did good was playing  the role of Mercutio.  One thing that I could've improved on was showing more emotion. At times I would say my lines with the same facial expression's and the same tone of voice. I think that I should have changed up my voice soft and sadder tone when I get stabbed by Tybalt.  Also maybe I should've been more confident all saying it like when I first speak and my honesty is being questioned.  Things that came easy to me during this was being able to know when my lines were up I knew when to say what and when it would be after who. Another thing that came  easy was being able to memorize where to go and stand like the blocking of scene.  Things that were hard for me where I was the memorizing your lines but another thing was being able to portray Mercutio because he is so many different emotions in the beginning is a confident but as it goes on at sadder depressed.  So it is hard to make sure all those emotions come out and play.  Overall I had to grade  myself out of ten  I would give me a eight. Reason for this is because I knew all my alarms I knew what emotions I had to portray and when I need to portray them. I could have improved on making those emotions come out and making the audience know that though he said oh he's happy now.   I think that as a group we adapted almost all of our Literary features.  One of them that we did well was foreshadowing. The reason why I think you did this one pretty well is because right before the fight scene I have a big line, in that I say " Kings of cats and one of her nine lives.... I will plug is from the ears and make it eight" when I say this I'm saying I'm going to kill the other 8 lives he has because he is a cat. Other one that I think we did really good this imagery. I think we set the stage while in the audience could understand and picture this fight scene in there heads.

I really enjoyed the fall play surprisingly because i was a little skeptical at first because I have never been to a play before but i liked it. I love the story, how its a big family that always have a christmas party every year. I could connect to it because my family always throws a party and i don't know how to really explain it but it just felt like I was there and it was maybe like some of the party that my grandparents threw. The character I felt did the best job was the one that David Mathason did. Its because he just fits the role perfectly because thats almost like how he dresses in school you always see him with his shirt untucked and his tie all lose.  The singing was a interesting touch because I think that each song almost told a different story like the one that Sam Weed sang about the boy that she once new. Her emotions really came out and it was really great to watch. And it was a good way to break up the play. I will be trying to go to more plays becuase its different I'm use to going to a football game or baseball and after a while it gets boring and it starts to get repetitive and it was a really nice change of pace. Also I give a lot more respect to actors becuase they all memorized all of there lines, I had a lot of trouble memorizing mine and i maybe had like a tenth of what they had.

Performance log

I was having some trouble memorizing my lines. So a way to fix this problem was I recorded me saying the lines and then had it playing on a loop over and over again. I would listen to this for like 15 minutes take a break then go back on and 15 minutes. As a result the next time we performed are seeing in class I knew the lines by heart.   The reason why I think that this helps me is because when you're on the stage the only thing you have is the voice in your head. So by training yourself to always be hearing your lines in your head, when you get flustered that's what you go back to.  Also I had to figure out a way to be more emotional,  The reason for this is because my character Mercutio has a lot of mixed emotions during the scene, he has to be angry, he has to feel betrayed, and finally he needs to feel sad. So a way to channel my emotions to reflect those.  I had to do something different because I wasn't tapping into them. So I looked up a couple of ideas on the Internet and I found one. It was to think of a memory that reflected that scene or emotion in that play. So when I felt the trade I thought of a time when I actually did feel the trade in real life .  And when I did that I found out that it actually worked, I was surprised. And as a result of me doing this the play fell more realistic and not staged.  Another thing I had to add was I needed to use my hands because when we were just practicing I had my hands in my pockets and I was just saying saying the lines. So when I am angry I will push someone or like nudge them on the shoulder that being either Romeo or table. If I'm sad maybe I'll shrug my shoulders and bring my hands and more to show that I'm vulnerable.  At the end when I have to curse the two houses the Capulets in the Montagues I have my hands out in their fisted to resemble me being angry and the hatred towards Romeo because he killed me he led me to believe that everything was OK and it really wasn't.   Another thing that I had a perfect was the blocking of our play so in the beginning of the play I will be with Romeo and will be on one side until be on the other. But as I'm saying my lines also I saw her walking to Tybalt in Romeo slightly move back. And then when we're about to fight we will be facing each other closest possible.  Romeo during the whole thing is almost laying back he's taking a step back he doesn't really want to be involved. But as the play continues as our scene digresses he slowly starts getting into stuff in at the end when they fight when he finally flights table you see that he is not being a coward anymore he is Romeo the prince of Verona.

Performance log 2

On Monday we really over exaggerated the two swords fights we have because last week when we did them they were almost like playful fights. So we really focused on making sure that we really were like in a sword fight and by doing this it made the play more realistic.

On Tuesday we went over the play a couple more times and we added some things here and there to make it feel believable like when jack was mad he would push veronica bucks jack is Tybalt and he needs to act strong. I really slowed down my lines because i was rushing them and went i did it it was better overall. Also you could understand it more.

On Thursday all we did was try to remember our lines because jack wasn't in class. The way i learned them was by writing them over and over again.

Friday, October 28, 2016

When I did research on Uta Hagen one of the things I learned was that she believed that you need to know so much about you character that you could be like him for a day. I used the questions on Merctio to better understand him more.  And as a result of that when we acted out the play for the first time not just reading through it, I knew what emotions to portray and when to show them.  Also I used a tequinque from the father of acting witch was when you need to portray a certain  emotion you need to think of something that will get you feeling that way, because if you think it then your body will actually do what you need to do.
Tuesday- My group and I finished our scripts and also the blocking. We then went over them twice just reading them, we didn't practice getting into character yet because we thinks that's it's important to know what your lines are and work out the kinks. We had a couple of kinks we had to workout mostly just getting Veronica caught up and we also had to change up some of the roles because it suited someone else better. After going through the play a couple of times we felt that we did enough that day. We then went over the costumes. I will be wearing white, Romeo will be almost wearing the same thing but he will also wear some gold to represent that he is wealthy and very important.

Thursday- We acted out the play this time, trying to step in the shoes of our characters. However we ran into a couple slight problems involving not being able to keep it together. I had to say a weird and kinda funny line right before the fight scene between Tybalt and I. And jack just kept laughing and then Veronica would then I would. It took us about like five times to get over the fact not to laugh. The way we figured it out was two options. One was to bite the inside of you cheeks to prevent you from laughing, but it slowed the speed of the play. So another thing we came up with was to think of something sad before i said my line so that they would almost like counter each other out. And it worked we were able to go over the play a couple more times after that. And I felt that it was a very productive day.
Monologue
TYBALT - Down Center
This, by his voice, should be a Montague.
Fetch me my rapier, boy. What dares the slave
Come hither, cover'd with an antic face,
To fleer and scorn at our solemnity?
Now, by the stock and honour of my kin,
To strike him dead, I hold it not a sin.
Tis he, that villain Romeo.

NEW SCENE
TYBALT - Down Left
Gentlemen, good e’en. A word with one of you.
Mercutio, thou consortest with Romeo.

MERCUTIO - Center Right
Consort? What, dost thou make us minstrels?
An thou make minstrels of us, look to hear
nothing but discords. Here’s my fiddlestick; here’s
that shall make you dance. Zounds, consort!
Men’s eyes were made to look, and let them gaze.
I will not budge for no man’s pleasure, I.
(Enter Romeo.)

TYBALT
Well, peace be with you, sir. Here comes my man.

MERCUTIO - Down Right
But I’ll be hanged, sir, if he wear your livery.
Marry, go before to field, he’ll be your follower.
Your Worship in that sense may call him “man.”

TYBALT - Down Center
Romeo, the love I bear thee can afford
No better term than this: thou art a villain.

ROMEO - Up Right
Tybalt, the reason that I have to love thee
Doth much excuse the appertaining rage
To such a greeting. Villain am I none.
Therefore farewell. I see thou knowest me not.

TYBALT
Boy, this shall not excuse the injuries
That thou hast done me. Therefore turn and draw.

ROMEO - Center Right
I do protest I never injured thee
But love thee better than thou canst devise
Till thou shalt know the reason of my love.
And so, good Capulet, which name I tender
As dearly as mine own, be satisfied.

MERCUTIO - Down Center
O calm, dishonorable, vile submission!
]Alla stoccato carries it away.
(He draws)
Tybalt, you ratcatcher, will you walk?

TYBALT
What wouldst thou have with me?

MERCUTIO
Good king of cats, nothing but one of your
nine lives, that I mean to make bold withal, and, as
you shall use me hereafter, dry-beat the rest of the
eight. Will you pluck your sword out of his pilcher
by the ears? Make haste, lest mine be about your
ears ere it be out.

TYBALT
I am for you.
(He draws)

ROMEO - Down Center
Gentle Mercutio, put thy rapier up.

MERCUTIO
Come, sir, your passado.
(They fight. )

ROMEO
beat down their weapons.
Gentlemen, for shame, forbear this outrage!
Tybalt, Mercutio, the prince expressly hath
Forbidden bandying in Verona streets:
Hold, Tybalt! good Mercutio!
(TYBALT under ROMEO's arm stabs MERCUTIO, and flies with his followers)

MERCUTIO - Down Left
I am hurt.
A plague o' both your houses! I am sped.
Is he gone, and hath nothing?
(MERCUTIO Exits)

NEW SCENE…

ROMEO - Down Left
This day's black fate on more days doth depend;
This but begins the woe, others must end.
Alive, in triumph! and Mercutio slain!
Away to heaven, respective lenity,
And fire-eyed fury be my conduct now!
(Re-enter TYBALT) Up Right
Now, Tybalt, take the villain back again,
That late thou gavest me; for Mercutio's soul
Is but a little way above our heads,
Staying for thine to keep him company:
Either thou, or I, or both, must go with him.

TYBALT - Down Center
Thou, wretched boy, that didst consort him here,
Shalt with him hence.

ROMEO - Down Center
This shall determine that.
(They fight; TYBALT falls)

ROMEO
O, I am fortune's fool!

I have to portray Mercutio, to do this  successfully I have to have the emotions of being sad and betrayed. I need to portray these emotions because right before Mercutio is about to die he realizes that it's all Romeos fall for his death because of  his love toward Juliet. So, in his last words right before he's about to die he put a curse on the two households. That is why I wouldn't have to feel betrayed. I will also have to feel sad because I die and there's nothing I could do to prevent it. A way for me to prepare for this sceneill be using Ulta Hagenens nine step rule.  By doing this I will be able to understand my character more because it ask you a series of the 5W's questions.  Way I will be able to us reflect these emotions is by using this technique from Stan Sasuke his technique is to think of a memory that you have in your head and express it. This is what I will have to do to portray Mercutio.

Uta Hagen made a series of nine steps that actors should live by.  She believed that If you can master all of these before you go in to record the first scene you will be a great actor.
1.  WHO AM I?

2.  WHAT TIME IS IT?

3.  WHERE AM I?

4.  WHAT SURROUNDS ME?

5.  WHAT ARE THE GIVEN CIRCUMSTANCES?

6.  WHAT IS MY RELATIONSHIP?

7.  WHAT DO I WANT?

8.  WHAT IS IN MY WAY?

9.  WHAT DO I DO TO GET WHAT I WANT?

Your Worship in that sense may call him “man.”

TYBALT
Romeo, the love I bear thee can afford
No better term than this: thou art a villain.

ROMEO
Tybalt, the reason that I have to love thee
Doth much excuse the appertaining rage
To such a greeting. Villain am I none.
Therefore farewell. I see thou knowest me not.

TYBALT
Boy, this shall not excuse the injuries
That thou hast done me. Therefore turn and draw.

ROMEO
I do protest I never injured thee
But love thee better than thou canst devise
Till thou shalt know the reason of my love.
And so, good Capulet, which name I tender
As dearly as mine own, be satisfied.

MERCUTIO
O calm, dishonorable, vile submission!
Alla stoccato carries it away.

(He draws)

ROMEO
Gentle Mercutio, put thy rapier up.

MERCUTIO
Come, sir, your passado.They fight.

ROMEO
Draw, Benvolio; beat down their weapons.
Gentlemen, for shame, forbear this outrage!
Tybalt, Mercutio, the prince expressly hath
Forbidden bandying in Verona streets:
Hold, Tybalt! good Mercutio!
(TYBALT under ROMEO's arm stabs MERCUTIO, and flies with his followers)

MERCUTIO
I am hurt.
A plague o' both your houses! I am sped.
Is he gone, and hath nothing?
(MERCUTIO Exits)

NEW SCENE…

ROMEO
This day's black fate on more days doth depend;
This but begins the woe, others must end.
Alive, in triumph! and Mercutio slain!
Away to heaven, respective lenity,
And fire-eyed fury be my conduct now!
(Re-enter TYBALT)

Now, Tybalt, take the villain back again,
That late thou gavest me; for Mercutio's soul
Is but a little way above our heads,
Staying for thine to keep him company:
Either thou, or I, or both, must go with him.

TYBALT
Thou, wretched boy, that didst consort him here,
Shalt with him hence.

ROMEO
This shall determine that.

(They fight; TYBALT falls)

ROMEO
O, I am fortune's fool!
